Historic Presentation by HSU Faculty

June 11, 2024

Dr. John N. Davis, Lee and Lunelle Nix Hemphill Endowed Chair in Business, co-presented a paper with Jeremy Maynard ’08,  Associate Director of the Rupert and Pauline Richardson Library, and with James W. Steely, a consulting architectural historian in Denver, Colorado, entitled “Reconstructing Reconstruction with Rupert N. Richardson” at the 2024 annual meeting of the West Texas Historical Association, Friday, April 5, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas.

The paper’s topic, How did Richardson’s descriptions of Reconstruction change across multiple editions of what was, in its time, the gold standard of collegiate Texas history textbooks?, was inspired by Dr. Rupert Richardson ’12, former president and faculty of HSU. The presenters evaluated how Dr. Richardson’s published views of reconstruction changed in succeeding editions of his textbook [First Edition], Texas: The Lone Star State, by comparing and contrasting the chapter “Reconstruction 1865-1874” in each edition published during his lifetime.
